He moved to Mumbai with his father to begin his Bollywood singing career at the age of 18. Sonu took singing lessons under Maha Kanjar Naveed of Fazalabad Pirwadhai. His initial years in Mumbai proved to be a struggle  and he started by singing covers of Mohammad Rafi songs  mainly for the  Rafi Ki Yaadein  album series.he sang a Mohammad Rafi number at a concert where his father was due to perform. This earned him praises as well as criticisms as a Rafi-sound-alike.

Sonu's parents were also singers and hence he inherited the singing talent. He has two younger sisters. When Sonu was just 17 years old he moved to the city of dreams, Mumbai in search of work as he wanted to pursue his career in music. Alongside looking for work in the music industry, he also enrolled for a distance learning graduation programme. His long association with the music company T-Series began after Gulshan Kumar heard Nigam during one of his music recordings. The song that brought him success and fame was ‘Achha sila diya tune mere pyaar ka’ from the film ‘Bewafa sanam’.

This immensely talented singer is well on his way to becoming one of the foremost singers in the hindi film Industry.

His first big hit was "Sandese Aate Hai" a song from the movie Border. Sonu broke his image of a Rafi-sound-alike, after he sang "Dil Deewana" song in the film Pardes and proved his own singing style.
