Roop Kumar Rathod is an Indian playback singer and a music director. He is also an accomplished Ghazal singer and a Tabla player. He is the son of late Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod, a well known Indian classical singer. He is the brother of Vinod Kumar Rathod, also an Indian playback singer and music director Shravan Kumar Rathod (Nadeem-Shravan fame).
Roopkumar started his career as a Tabla player. He used to play Tabla for the two well-known Ghazal singers Pankaj Udhas and Anup Jalota. He also used to play Tabla for well-known Indian playback singer Lata Mangeshkar during concerts and stage shows. He had played Tabla for Shyam Benegal's “Discovery of India”, an Indian television serial.
Roopkumar was introduced as a playback singer by the music directors Laxmikant – Pyarelal for the Hindi film Angaar (1992). Later, he sang in the Hindi films such as Gumrah (1993), Raja (1995), Naajayaz (1995), Gaddaar (1995), Bhairavi (1996), PremGranth (1996) etc. He got his major breakthrough with the songs “To Chalun” and “Sandesein Aate Hain” from the Hindi film Border (1997). The songs made him popular among the public.
Roopkumar has sung for several Hindi films such as Kareeb (1998), Vinashak (1998), Mother (1999), Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999), Godmother (1999), Hu Tu Tu (1999), Laawaris (1999), International Khiladi (1999), Sarfarosh (1999), Dillagi (1999), Thakshak (1999), Mela (2000, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar (2000), Gaja Gamini (2000), Censor (2001), Rahul (2001), Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai (2001), Filhaal (2002), Lal Salaam (2002), Gunaah (2002), Jism (2003), Baaz (2003), Armaan (2003), Tum (2004), Lakshya (2004), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (2004), Madhoshi (2004), Veer-Zaara (2004), The Film (2005), Bhagmati (2005), UNNS (2006), Anwar (2007).
Roopkumar is also a music director and has composed the music of films such as Woh Tera Naam Tha (2004), Madhoshi (2004), Zeher (2005) etc.
Roopkuamar is married to Sunali Rathod, the daughter of famous classical dancer Leena Jhaveri. Sunali is also an Indian playback singer and has sung for various Hindi films.
Sunali Rathod is also a Bollywood playback singer. She is well known for her Ghazals and Bhajans. She hails from a business family and is the daughter of famous classical dancer Leena Jhaveri. She was trained in music by Purshottam Upadhyay and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
Sunali has sung in Hindi movies such as Border (1997) and Kitne Door Kitne Paas (2002). She has released several albums of her own such as ‘Aaghaz’, ‘Bazm-E-Meer’, ‘Khushboo’, ‘Ishara’ etc. She made her debut as a pop singer with the album This is Me (2006).
Sunali was honored with the 1996 Best Ghazal Singer award for her album Aaghaaz.
Both Roop and Sonali were the contestants of Mission Ustaad, a musical show on 9X Entertainment channel. They were declared the Ustaad Jodi on February 23, 2008.
